In 1860, Prosper Maufoux, who had left his job as a notary, founded the eponymous château, Prosper Maufoux, in Burgundy.
The winery soon became a success and began exporting all over the world, contributing greatly to the development of Burgundy wines on the global market, especially in the United States.
It was not until 2010 that the Piffaut family, a Burgundian family with over 200 years of winemaking history, took over the reins of Prosper Maufoux. Piffaut bought Château de Saint-Aubin, a famous château located in the south of the Côtes de Bourgogne, and its surrounding vineyards, and then moved Château Prosper Maufoux into this 300-year-old château.
The château and the château are situated at the heart of the Route des Grands Crus, a pilgrimage route for wine lovers. This is a pilgrimage route for wine lovers that passes through dozens of Burgundian towns and villages from north to south, and is the cradle of many Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. As a result, the vineyards of Prosper Maufoux situated here also have exceptional terroir.
In addition to Saint-Tropez, Prosper Maufoux owns outstanding plots in Meursault in the Côtes de Bourgogne, in Puligny-Montrachet and in Chassagne-Montrachet. In addition, the estate has expanded into the Cóte de Nuits, Cóte Chálonnaise and Máconnais appellations.
In terms of vineyard management, Prosper Maufoux has always followed a very strict sustainable management philosophy and has been awarded HVE 3 (High Environmental Value), one of the highest ecological honors in France.
Elegance, finesse and personality are the key words for Prosper Maufoux's winemaking style.
The winemakers at Prosper Maufoux are guided by the teachings of Nadine Gublin, one of Henri Jayer's favorite disciples, who was the "God of Burgundy", and by non-interventionism. Slow extraction, gentle vinification, light toasting in French oak barrels, and long aging result in white wines full of freshness, energy and tension, as well as silky, elegant, out-of-the-box reds.
Prosper Maufoux's lineup is very broad, covering Chablis in the north and Maconnais and Beaujolais in the south.
They have also received many prestigious recognitions, including gold and silver medals at events such as the International Wine Challenge and the Decanter World Wine Awards, and awards from magazines such as Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits. Wine Enthusiast, Wine & Spirits and other magazines, as well as James Suckling, Bettane+Desseauve and other wine critics 90 + points. The Château de Saint-Aubin First Growth white wine was also recognized by Forbes as "a rising star in Burgundy".
