In 1829, John Septimus Roe ended an
illustrious career serving in the British Navy by becoming Western Australia's
first Surveyor General.
In 1840, Queen Victoria recognized John's
57 years of loyal service to the Commonwealth by granting him 4,000 acres of
land along the river in the Swan Valley.
John named the land after a small monastery
where he first lived in England, and Sandalford was born. He and his wife then
settled here and raised 13 children.
1842 was the first recorded grape harvest
at Sandalford, but these were not wine grapes, but table grapes.
On John's death, Sandalford was succeeded
by his eldest son, who exported the grapes abroad, becoming the first family in
the region to open up international markets. At the same time, they were
pioneers in leading local production efforts in farming, fruit and vegetable
growing and grazing.
After the Second World War, the Swan Valley
region benefited from the new ideas and techniques brought by immigrants, and
only then did it really enter into the modern development of winemaking.
In 1970, Sandalford purchased 300 hectares
of vineyards in Margaret River, another appellation, and the development of
Sandalford soon attracted the attention of many people, including the
Prentiville family of Western Australia.
In 1991, the Prentivier family purchased
Sandalford Winery, injecting new blood into their existing hospitality and
tourism business and revitalizing the 160 year old Sandalford brand.
In 1998, after a $6 million upgrade and
rebranding in Prentyville, Sandalford's wines were already of outstanding quality.
With the support of the existing industry chain, Prentyville further developed
Sandalford into a renowned brand for wine dining and tourism.
Sandalford has won 59 awards since 2002, in
addition to James Halliday's "Red Five Star Winery" honor.
The winery is not only a popular
destination on WA wine tours, but has also been honored as a reception site for
the Dutch Royal Family and a must-see for leaders visiting WA.
Sandalford's vineyards are located in the
Swan Valley and Margaret River appellations. The vineyards in the Swan Valley
are located along the river, and the wines produced here are characterized by
some old vines of more than 50 years old, and their styles are dominated by
fruity aromas, with some delicate and refined spices.
Sandalford has another vineyard in Margaret
River is located in Wilyabrup, one of the most central sub-appellations of the
appellation, and are one of the oldest and largest vineyards in Margaret River,
with some of the finest terroir. It produces some of Sandalford's finest wines.
