Bowen Estate

date:2024/4/2 7:7:22 area:Coonawarra, South Australia

Situated ontraditional red land in the Koolawarra, Bowen Winery was founded in 1972 by Doug Bowen and his wife.

After nearly 50 years, the family-owned boutique winery is now in the hands of Emma Bowen, the eldest daughter of the family, who is responsible for the wines.

The qualitywines are representative of the outstanding terroir.

Coonawarra has a cool maritime climate with a long fall allowing the grapes to ripen long enough to build up flavor profiles.

The average winter temperature of 9.8 degrees Celsius gives the wines an elegant style and a good sense of structure. Compared to the fullness and sweetness of Barossa,Coonawarra wines tend to be cooler and more elegant.

Not only the climate, but the traditional red soils of Coonawarra also play an important role in the growth of the grapes. The top layer of red soil is rich in nutrients and easily permeable to water. Beneath the red soil is a layer of limestone about 15 centimeters thick with a hard texture. Before planting the grapes, the limestone layer is usually broken up to ensure that the roots of the vines can grow downwards.

In addition to the above mentioned "timing" and "location", it is also the"people" that make the difference. Since the acquisition of the first vineyard in 1972, Bowen Estate has been pruning the vines manually.

In 1989, the use of arched trellises was introduced and has become an integral part of the winery's style.

The 33 hectares of vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

Although there are only three vintages, the winery has always been a place where artisanshipand craftsmanship are the key to the quality of its wines.

Bowen Estate believes that it is more important to insist on quality than quantity.

As a family-owned boutique winery, with a limited vineyard area and labor force, the winery has always insisted on refined operations and small-scale winemaking, never expanding its product line, and adopting a strict quota system for its local agents, in order to present the truest Coonawarra terroir in the wine glass.

As the saying goes, "if you don't forget it, it will come back to you". In this unique red soil of Coonawarra, the Cabernet Sauvignon red wine made by Bowen Estate was already on the first list of Langton Classified wines in 1990, and was one of the first 34 wines to be included in the Langton Classified list.

Although the list has changed over the past 20 years, Bowen Estate's Cabernet Sauvignon has consistently been ranked in the Langton Classification and have never fallen out of the list.

Bowen is listed in Langton's 80 Most Popular Wines in Australia, based on data from annual wine auctions, and is one of the most affordable.

Bowen's wines have also been praised by James Haliday as "outstanding value for money and representing the true flavors of Coonawarra".
